Expedition has become a much more attractive activity in Path of Exile 2, especially after recent changes improved its reward potential. For players building their stash of POE 2 Items, Expedition can offer a steady mix of useful currency, crafting materials, and valuable encounters. However, the recent updates have also changed some mechanics and introduced new considerations that are easy to miss.

The biggest lesson for anyone collecting POE 2 Items through Expedition is that the mechanic is not simply about placing explosives and collecting whatever appears. Performance problems, immortal monsters, failed detonators, and changes to reward scaling can all affect the value of a run. Understanding these problems before committing expensive Waystones can save both time and resources.

Performance Problems Are Finally Improving

For several weeks, some Expedition encounters were among the most frustrating activities in the game from a performance perspective. Large groups of Runic monsters could cause severe frame drops, long freezes, or even crashes. The problem became particularly noticeable when several effects appeared together during a large detonation sequence.

One infamous issue caused the game to freeze for anywhere from roughly 30 to 90 seconds while displaying spinning gears. Players sometimes assumed the game had completely crashed because there was little indication that it would recover. Recent fixes have addressed this problem, making these encounters much more stable.

Nvidia users should also pay attention to their graphics driver. Grinding Gear Games worked with Nvidia to investigate a shader heap issue that was responsible for certain device-removed crashes. Players affected by this problem should use Nvidia Driver 610.88 or a newer version.

There can still be some stuttering immediately after updating. This is not necessarily another bug. The game may need to rebuild its shader cache, so the first few maps can feel less smooth than later ones.

Immortal Monsters Remain a Serious Problem

While performance has improved, Expedition still has mechanical problems that can completely ruin a map. One of the most noticeable is the immortal Runic monster issue.

Sometimes a Runic monster becomes completely immune to damage even though there is no Remnant modifier explaining the immunity. This is different from accidentally activating a modifier that makes a monster immune to a specific damage type. When the bug happens, the monster simply cannot be killed normally.

Unfortunately, there is no clever build adjustment that reliably solves the problem. If the monster is genuinely bugged, abandoning the instance may be the only practical option. That can be especially painful when the Expedition contains valuable rewards or when the player has already spent considerable time preparing the encounter.

Detonators can also fail. Players have reported pressing the detonation control only for the action to register without properly triggering the expected explosion. Since the entire Expedition layout depends on carefully choosing which Remnants to activate, a failed detonation can interfere with the intended route.

Watch Where Runic Monsters Spawn

Terrain is another issue worth keeping in mind. Runic sniper spiders can sometimes spawn in awkward locations or move into cliffs and inaccessible areas. In a regular map, an enemy getting stuck might only cost a few seconds. In a Grand Expedition, however, missing a monster can prevent the encounter from progressing properly.

This is particularly frustrating for builds that depend on clearing everything along a planned route. Before investing heavily into an Expedition, it is worth paying attention to the terrain and the positions of dangerous monsters rather than assuming every encounter will function perfectly.

Reward Scaling Has Changed

Recent updates also changed how Expedition rewards scale. A hidden mechanic previously granted an additional 50% Monster Rarity for each Remnant completed inside Grand Expeditions. This bonus was not intended, so it was removed.

Players who want that extra rarity now need to allocate the Gaining Traction Expedition Atlas passive. This makes Atlas planning more important because the old reward behavior should no longer be treated as automatic.

Catalysts have also been removed from Expedition rewards. Tujen no longer offers them, and random Expedition chests no longer provide them. Catalysts are now associated with Ultimatum encounters, so players should adjust their farming plans accordingly.

A Better Way to Plan Expeditions

The new Expedition Atlas system gives players more reasons to think about their route before detonating anything. Underground cave entrances marked by icons deserve particular attention because they can contain recipes needed to unlock some of the more valuable high-tier Remnant rewards.

Liquid Verisium is another option for players who want more control. By taking the Feeling Lucky? passive, players can purchase Liquid Verisium from Farrow and use it to force a random Runic Remnant encounter. This can be useful when the naturally generated map layout is not especially attractive.

Tier 15 Waystones or higher are also worth considering for serious Expedition farming. Lower tiers suffer from penalties that make sustaining valuable high-end Logbook strategies much harder. If your goal is long-term profit rather than simply completing an occasional Expedition, map tier and Atlas investment should be part of the calculation.

Trading Around Your Expedition Strategy

Even with the recent improvements, Expedition rewards will not always provide exactly what your build needs. One run might produce useful currency while another gives materials that are more valuable to a different type of player. That is where checking a reliable poe2 trade site can help you understand what your surplus items are worth before deciding whether to keep, exchange, or sell them.

The important thing is to treat Expedition as part of a larger economy rather than an isolated farming activity. With the major performance problems receiving fixes and the remaining mechanical issues understood, players can plan their routes more carefully, invest in the right Atlas passives, and make better decisions with the rewards they collect.
