There's a reason people keep talking about Grim Pillars on Oracle right now. It isn't just another flashy cold skill that looks good in clips. When it's built around Spell Totem, the whole thing starts to feel a bit cheeky. The normal Runic Ward cost gets skipped, so you're mainly watching Spirit and placement instead. That also means your gear choices, passive tree, and even your stash of PoE 2 Items matter a lot more than they would on a simple self-cast setup.

Why Spell Totem changes the skill
Grim Pillars usually asks you to spend Runic Ward to create the ice crystals. That cost is the awkward part. Put the skill on Spell Totem, though, and the totem handles the casting while you avoid that Runic Ward drain completely. From there, the build becomes about forcing the crystals to blow up when you want them to. Entangle and Elemental Discharge are the usual tools here. You drop your pillars, prime the area, and then shatter everything before monsters have time to wander into the crystals naturally.

What actually scales the damage
The build has three stats you'll notice straight away: area of effect, crit, and mana. Area is huge because bigger explosions overlap more often, especially on bosses that don't move much. Crit scaling feels great on Oracle because the class can smooth out weak non-critical hits through its ascendancy tools. Then there's Archmage. Since Archmage pulls damage from your maximum mana, stacking mana isn't just a defence plan. It's damage too. That's why low-mana versions can feel underwhelming, while late-game versions suddenly start deleting bosses.

PriorityWhy it matters
Area of EffectMore overlap from crystal explosions, stronger boss damage.
Critical Chance and BonusOracle gets much better value from consistent critical scaling.
Maximum ManaBoosts Archmage damage and later becomes a defensive layer.
SpiritNeeded to run the four-totem version comfortably.

Levelling and survival feel different
Early on, don't rush the fancy keystones just because the endgame version uses them. Eldritch Battery and Harmony Within can feel awful if your mana pool is still small. A good target is about 2,000 to 2,500 maximum mana before making that swap. Once you're there, taking damage from mana before life becomes much more reliable. It's not immortal, of course, but it gives you a much larger buffer against heavy hits. You'll still need mana regeneration, sensible flask use, and decent positioning.

Mapping and boss play
In maps, the build is quick and surprisingly clean. It handles open layouts better than many Spark setups because the damage doesn't care about awkward walls, cracks, or Abyss terrain. The annoying bit is movement. Your own crystals can block you, so dodge-rolling through them becomes part of the rhythm. For bosses, the burst pattern is simple but strict: set your totems, cast Entangle once or twice, place Mana Tempest, and stand inside it while the pillars detonate. Resistance reduction or penetration matters here, since endgame bosses won't politely fall over to raw cold damage alone.

Gear checks before it feels smooth
The four-totem Archmage version asks for roughly 395 Spirit, which is a real gearing wall. Look for Spirit on your amulet and sceptre, then stack maximum mana and mana regeneration wherever you can. If you're short, reservation efficiency on the tree can patch the gap. A strong wand with levels to all spell skills is usually more realistic than chasing perfect cold-only modifiers. Also, keep the Spell Totem and Archmage setup on weapon set one, with utility skills on weapon set two. Players hunting upgrades or cheap PoE 2 Items should prioritise mana and Spirit first, because the build only starts to feel effortless once those basics are sorted.
